Question about my landlord saying renters insurance is pointless

My landlord shrugged at my door last Tuesday and said "renters insurance is a waste of money, nothing ever happens here." That stuck with me, so I'm curious what you all pay, because I'm seeing quotes from $12 to $30 a month for a 1 bedroom. Worth it or nah?
