Went to visit a friend in a walkup, now I get why people love those dumb loft beds
Last weekend I stayed over at a friend's place in a fifth floor walkup in Brooklyn, no elevator, tiny kitchen, and honestly the bedroom was basically a closet. But she had this loft bed she built herself from two IKEA dressers and a slab of plywood, with a little desk and bookshelf tucked underneath. I kept thinking about how much wasted vertical space I have in my own rental, my ceilings are probably 9 feet and all I do is stack boxes on top of the closet. She said the whole thing cost her like $80 in wood and screws, plus a weekend of cursing at the drill. It made me wonder if we're all just living in one layer of our apartments when we could easily have two. Has anyone else tried a DIY loft setup without wrecking your security deposit or your back?
