My uncle told me to never trust a multimeter reading on a fridge compressor without checking the start relay first

Honestly, I thought he was just being old school when he said that last year. I had a Samsung fridge in the shop that was showing an open winding on the compressor, so I quoted the customer for a full replacement. Tbh, I almost ordered the part right then. But I remembered his advice and pulled the start relay off first. Ngl, the relay was totally shot, but the compressor itself was fine. I swapped in a $15 relay and the thing fired right up. Saved the customer over $800 and a ton of hassle. Has anyone else had a simple test save them from a huge misdiagnosis like that?

Forget checking relays first, that just wastes time. I trust my meter and go straight to the big stuff.

Read a forum post once where a guy replaced a whole AC unit based on a bad capacitor reading. Turns out his meter probes were just dirty and not making good contact. He cleaned them, got a normal reading, and felt like a total idiot. It's wild how the simplest thing can trick you into seeing a problem that isn't there. Your uncle gave you solid advice. Always check the cheap, easy stuff twice before you go down the rabbit hole.

My buddy wasted a whole Saturday on a dead outlet before realizing, like @the_terry said, the GFCI in the bathroom was just tripped.
