PSA: Stop replacing the whole ice maker when a $6 clip is the real fix
Last week I had a Whirlpool fridge in Denver where the ice maker quit after 2 years, and the common advice online is to swap the whole unit for $180. I ignored that and checked the fill tube first, because I noticed the ice tray was bone dry but the auger still turned. The little plastic clip that holds the fill tube in place had cracked, so water was missing the tray and freezing in the door. I put in a new clip, cleared the ice chunk with a hair dryer, and it worked fine. Why does everyone jump straight to a full replacement when a 5 minute look at the water path usually tells you what is actually wrong?
The part about the fill tube clip cracking is spot on. I read a service tech writeup a while back that said something like 70% of ice maker failures are really water supply or fill tube problems, not the maker itself. The auger still turning is the tell, just like you said. People jump to swapping the whole unit because that is what the big box stores and YouTube videos push, and nobody wants to spend time chasing a water path. That little clip costs nothing compared to a full unit. Good on you for actually looking first.
