That Frigidaire from 2004 finally gave up on me last month
Had this lady call me out to her place near Columbus last week. Her old Frigidaire freezer stopped holding temp. I dug behind it and found the condenser coil was just caked with dust and cat hair three inches thick. Cleaned it off and it kicked right back on. Then she told me it was already 21 years old. Made me think about how units back then could take that abuse. Are newer models even built to last that long anymore?

Man, that's a solid run for any appliance. They definitely don't make 'em like that anymore.

My 2003 Maytag washer just finally died last year. That was 19 years of running almost every single day with a family of five. The repair guy who came to look at it said the motor finally just wore out, but he also said the new ones barely last 7-8 years if you're lucky. It blew my mind how much cheaper the parts look inside the new machines compared to the old ones. Makes you wonder if they design them to fail on purpose or if it's just cheaper materials all around.

My buddy Gary out in Grand Rapids had the same thing happen with his 2003 Kenmore. He called me all excited cause he dug out a mountain of dust bunnies from the back and it fixed the cooling issue. @gibson.morgan those old compressors were built with thicker copper lines and heavy duty capacitors. Gary's unit ran another three years before the door seal started letting in warm air, but the innards were still going strong. Meanwhile his sister bought a brand new Samsung fridge and the ice maker died in 14 months. That generation of appliances just had more meat to them, less cost cutting.
