The repair manual for my 1987 Maytag washer had a tolerance chart that blew my mind
I picked up a used Maytag washer from a guy in Reno for $40. The thing was leaking, so I grabbed the original service manual off eBay for $12. In the back there was a chart for bearing clearance and it listed the acceptable range as 0.002 to 0.004 inches. I always thought you just snugged them up tight and called it good. I measured the old bearing with a dial indicator and it was at 0.009, way out of spec. Swapped in a new one at 0.003 and the leak stopped, plus the spin cycle got way quieter. Any of you guys ever bother measuring this stuff on old machines, or do you just replace and hope?
