Thought the thermal fuse trick on dryers was overhyped, but it saved me 2 hours today

I had a call at a house in Newark this morning, a Whirlpool dryer that just wouldn't run. Customer said it died mid-cycle. My first instinct was to tear into the motor or the belt switch, but I remembered a guy at a class last year saying check the thermal fuse on the blower housing first. I was skeptical, always figured that was a crutch for lazy techs. Well, I popped the back panel, tested the fuse with my multimeter, and sure enough it was open. Stuck a new one in and the thing fired right up. Customer was happy and I was back on the road in under 45 minutes. I still think you gotta rule out other stuff, but for quick wins that one earned my respect. Anyone else have a shortcut they wrote off until it actually worked?

Hold up, just a small thing on that. A thermal fuse isn't really about being a shortcut for lazy techs. It's a safety device that's meant to pop when the dryer gets too hot, usually from a clogged vent or lint buildup. If you just swap the fuse and don't check why it blew, you're probably going to see that same customer again in a month. The trick is good for a quick fix, but it's not the real solution if the underlying problem is still there. Gotta check the vent path and make sure the airflow is clear before you close that panel.

Wait wouldn't a blown fuse also tell you the vent is probably clogged somewhere?

Bet ivan774 is the type who actually reads the manual before plugging something in. lol. Throw in a new fuse without checking the vent and you're basically playing roulette with that customer's laundry room.
