Finally got to see the full mosaic at the Villa of the Mysteries after the new cleaning
I visited Pompeii about three years ago and the Villa of the Mysteries was amazing, but honestly, a lot of the famous red background in the frescoes looked kinda dull and faded. I went back last week (my sister was in town, so we made a trip) and the difference is wild. The team there did this new laser cleaning over the past year, and the colors are so much brighter now. You can actually see all the tiny details in the figures' clothing and the patterns on the floor. It's like the whole room went from a dusty old painting to something that feels almost new. I stood there for like twenty minutes just looking at one section I barely noticed before. Has anyone else seen a site right after a big conservation project like that? It really makes you appreciate the work.

You mentioned the red background looking dull before. I've always wondered, does that cleaning process risk damaging the original paint layers at all, or is the laser just taking off centuries of grime? It sounds amazing but also a little scary to work on something that old.

Jamie804, it's less scary when you're the one holding the laser, though my aim with a coffee cup is still a bigger risk.

Yeah but what if the laser misses some grime and leaves a weird patchy look?
