I used to think digging was the whole job until a dig in New Mexico

I was helping at a site near Santa Fe last fall, just moving dirt like always. The lead archaeologist stopped me and said, 'The story is in the soil, not just the stuff you pull out.' She made me look at the different colored dirt layers for a full hour before I touched anything. Now I spend way more time just looking at the ground before I even get my trowel out. Anyone else have a moment where they realized they were missing a basic step?

Got stuck in a parking lot behind someone who couldn't parallel park to save their life. Watched the whole thing. My own fault for not just walking away. Time just vanished.

Actually think that's a pretty good use of time. Watching people figure stuff out can be weirdly interesting.
