Showerthought: The laser scanning at Pompeii is a total game-changer

I saw a lecture comparing old survey maps from the 1980s to the new 3D models from last year. The difference is insane, you can now see individual brush strokes on frescoes from your laptop. Anyone else got a favorite site that tech has totally changed?

Honestly makes you wonder what we've already lost at other sites before this tech showed up. The old ways just couldn't catch that level of detail.

Just picture some poor grad student in the 90s trying to map a ruin with a tape measure and a dream. They probably missed a whole hidden chamber because a shrub looked funny. Now we're finding secret rooms from orbit while eating chips. Archaeology leveled up and left all the old gear in the dust.
