That week I volunteered at a dig and almost destroyed a 2,000 year old floor
Last spring I signed up for a weekend excavation near Bath and somehow ended up with the trowel right over what the supervisor called a 'delicate mosaic surface'. My heart dropped when I scraped too hard and a little tile popped loose, but the archaeologist just sighed and handed me a brush. The funny part was the next day I found a tiny Roman coin in my shoe, no idea how it got there. Still, that supervisor's face when I asked if I could go back to sorting pottery is something I won't forget. Has anyone else had a close call with an artifact that turned out way less dramatic than you expected?
