Visited the Cahokia Mounds last month and something felt off
Walked around Monks Mound for about two hours and noticed there's hardly any signage explaining how the native people actually moved that much dirt. They estimate 22 million cubic feet of earth was moved by hand. I get that they want to keep it respectful, but I think they're sanitizing the history too much. Anyone else feel like some sites hide the gritty realities of ancient construction?

Check the visitor center's little library area, @shane_hayes - there's a photocopy of an old field report that talks about the basket loads and human hauling methods they figured out from soil layers.

I mean, maybe that "off" feeling is just the weight of realizing they're still excavating bones under the parking lot.
