Heard a guy at the station say fire alarms save more lives than any firefighter ever could

I used to think our job was all about pulling people out of burning buildings, like in the movies. But last week this retired chief was giving a talk and he said that for every life we save in a fire, smoke alarms save about 10 more because they stop the fire before it gets bad. It hit me hard because Ive always seen the alarm checks as boring paperwork, but now I get why we push so hard for people to install them. Has anyone else had a moment where you realized the simple stuff matters more than the heroics?

Man, PREACH. That boring paperwork stuff is what actually stops people from dying before we even get the call. The flashy rescues are cool, but the real heroes are the beeping boxes on the ceiling.

Totally with you on "boring paperwork stuff," @ivanbell. It's so easy to forget the quiet work that keeps things from going sideways in the first place. I've seen too many close calls that could've been avoided if someone had just done the checks. Those beeping boxes are honestly the first line of defense, and they don't get nearly enough credit. Keep speaking up about it, man.

Guilty as charged on the boring paperwork stuff. I swear half my job is just making sure I fill out the right forms so the beeping boxes don't start screaming at me for no reason. Your mileage may vary but in my experience the real action is way less heroic and way more "did I remember to check the battery on that thing last week." Take this with a grain of salt but I've definitely saved more lives by filing a report correctly than by actually having to do anything brave. The glamour is totally overrated, trust me I've got the paper cuts to prove it.
