Were you absolutely sure that water shutoff valve was all the way off before you started? That little quarter-turn handle can be finicky if you don't push it past the last click. It takes a few seconds to locate that valve behind the toilet base, usually a small chrome or plastic knob near the floor. That one step saves you from turning your linen closet into a swimming pool.

Oh yeah learned that one the hard way with a basement flood last year.

3 gallons of water later and my bathroom looked like a scene from a horror movie. The shutoff valve thing is overrated honestly, half the time those things are seized up or you twist them the wrong way and snap the pipe. I just keep a big towel and a bucket nearby now, works way better than trying to be a plumber at 2am.
