My car key fob died at the worst possible moment, Walmart parking lot

So I'm parked at the Walmart on Route 22 in Union, NJ last Tuesday, trunk full of groceries, and my key fob just stops working. Clicking the button does nothing, the little red light won't even blink. I figured the battery was dead so I popped it open, and sure enough the battery was fine. Turns out the internal chip had just given up after 7 years of daily use. I ended up calling a locksmith who charged me $120 to reprogram a new fob right there in the parking lot. Has anyone else had a fob die without warning, and did you find a cheaper way to get a replacement?

Man I used to think those were overpriced too, but now I get it, that's rough.
