My microwave caught fire last Tuesday and I'm still mad about it

I was just reheating some leftover chili (nothing crazy) and suddenly smoke starts pouring out of the top vent. Turns out a cheap plastic lid I used three times before melted and ignited inside the unit. Has anyone else had a kitchen appliance just give up on them like that?

Wait, why should a cheap plastic lid surviving three runs make it "proven"? That's like saying a fork that didn't break after three stabs at a frozen dinner is a sturdy tool, not every piece of plastic handles the same heat distribution on the fourth go. Honestly, unless it shorted out from a bad wire or a known defect, I'd call this user error, not the microwave's fault - the thing just did its job of containing a fire, you know?

Did you check if the lid was actually microwave safe? I've had cheap plastic stuff say it's fine then totally fail in the heat. That smoke must have been awful, I would have been panicking. Honestly once an appliance shows any sign of weakness I just replace it, not worth the risk. Glad you're okay though, fire in the kitchen is no joke.

Haha, guess my microwave needed a smoke break too.
