Rant: I tried two ways to get my first real client and one was a total waste of time
For the last month, I tried two things to find work for my new flooring business. First, I spent hours making fancy flyers and putting them on car windshields, which got me zero calls. Then, I just went to my local hardware store in Springfield and asked the manager if I could leave a simple business card by the register. I got a call from a guy needing a kitchen floor the very next day. Has anyone else found that just talking to people in person beats all the paper stuff?

Did you try talking to any contractors at the hardware store while you were there?

Heard a marketing guy say once that handing someone a card face to face builds trust in seconds while flyers just get ignored. Your hardware store story proves that's exactly right.

Have you tried hanging around job sites or new construction neighborhoods? That flyer thing never worked for me either. People ignore paper on their cars, but if you walk up to a crew working on a house and drop off a card, they remember your face. I landed a whole bathroom remodel once just by stopping at a site where the tile guy didn't show up. It's about being where the work is happening, not where people are walking to their cars.
