Man, the smell when you first start composting is no joke. I remember my bin smelling like something died for a week straight. It does get better once you get the mix of greens and browns right, though. Turns out adding more dry leaves or shredded paper helps a ton. Makes you wonder why we ever thought throwing food in the trash was normal.
Seriously, my first compost bin smelled so bad I convinced myself it was just 'earthy'. My family refused to go near the backyard for a week. Turns out I was basically making a soup of food scraps with no browns at all. I fixed it by dumping in a whole bag of fallen leaves and some shredded cardboard. The smell went from rotten garbage to damp dirt in like two days. Now I just remind myself that if it stinks, add more paper or leaves, not more guilt.
