That garage door spring took me 4 hours, should have been 30 minutes
So last Saturday I decided to fix my own garage door torsion spring. Watched a 10 minute video, felt confident, bought the $60 spring kit from Home Depot. First mistake was not checking the door balance before I started. Second mistake was trying to loosen the old spring while the door was still partly engaged. After 3 stripped bolts and one close call with the cable whipping past my head, I finally got it done. But it took 4 damn hours including two trips to the hardware store for a 5/16" socket I thought I owned. My neighbor walked over and said he could have done it in 20 minutes with a friend and a couple of clamps. Has anyone else had a small repair spiral into an all day thing because you skipped reading the manual?

Every repair job I've ever done took twice as long because I skipped the setup part that seemed boring.

Wait, the cable whipped past your head? That's the part I can't get past. Those torsion springs store enough force to kill a grown man, and you're out there cowboying it with no clamps and a half-open door. My uncle lost two fingers to a garage door spring in 2009, so when I read that sentence I actually winced. You got lucky, man. Real lucky. Four hours and a hardware store trip beats a hospital visit any day.
