The trick that fixed my old music setup after years of frustration
I had this problem where my turntable would hum like crazy through my speakers. Drove me NUTS for like 6 months. I tried new cables, moved it far from the receiver, even bought a $40 power conditioner and nothing helped. Then a guy at a shop in Austin told me to unplug the ground wire from the amp and just let it dangle. Worked perfectly from that moment. Has anyone else dealt with some dumb simple fix that took way too long to find?

Wasted $40 on a power conditioner for a problem you could have solved by just letting wires flop around.

Wasted $40 on a power conditioner" is exactly the kind of overkill fix I'd totally do before checking the simple stuff lol.

Oh man, that's basically the audio equivalent of "did you try turning it off and on again." I had a similar issue with an old receiver that kept cutting out one channel, and I spent like two weekends resoldering connections and swapping out caps. Finally found out the speaker wire was just slightly too thick for the binding posts so it wasn't making contact half the time. A quick strip and twist job and it worked fine. Really makes you wonder how many "broken" things are just one dumb oversight away from working perfectly.
