Warning: I thought the $15 windshield repair kit from the auto parts place was junk, but it held for 8 months
Two sides on this one. My buddy swears the cheap chip repair kits are a scam and you should always pay a shop $60 to $100 to do it right. I figured the $15 kit from the parts store on Route 9 was worth a shot since my insurance wanted a $250 deductible on glass. I watched a 6 minute video, cleaned the chip with the little pin tool, and squeezed in the resin. It looked cloudy for a day and I almost chucked it. Eight months later, through a Pennsylvania winter with salt and freeze cycles, the chip hasn't spread a bit. Insurance guy even glanced at it during a renewal and didn't flag it. So is the cheap kit fine for small chips or did I just get lucky? What's the cutoff where you stop messing around and call a pro?
