My friend in Boise said he can't see the Milky Way from his backyard anymore

He told me the city lights have gotten so bright over the last five years that the galactic core is just a faint smudge now. It made me really appreciate the dark sky photo I took last year at a park three hours away. How far do you have to drive from your place to get a good shot of the stars?

So what's the closest dark sky spot you've found?

Found a decent spot about an hour east of town, past the last big truck stop. It's crazy how much light bleeds out from the city. Makes me notice the same thing with noise now, always a low hum somewhere. You have to really get out there to find actual quiet or actual dark.

But isn't some light and noise just the sound of people living? I kind of find that background hum comforting, like you're not totally alone out there. It's only a problem if you make it one.
