Try the clone stamp tool on a new layer, saved me a ton of time.

Totally agree, that's the only way I use it now. I used to clone directly onto the image and ruin a good sky or something. Last week I was fixing a power line in a vacation photo, messed up the grass underneath, and just deleted the bad layer to start over. It feels like a safety net that lets you work faster.

Honestly cloning onto a new layer feels like extra steps for me. I just set the sample point carefully and work directly on the image. It forces me to be more precise from the start, and I don't end up with a mess of layers to manage. For something like grass, a light touch with a soft brush works better than having an undo button in layer form.
