Found a trick for blending metallic paint that actually works

I was watching some old YouTube video from a guy in Ohio who does restorations, and he mentioned using a slower reducer to give the metallic particles more time to lay flat. Tried it last week on a silver Ford F-150 door I was repairing, and the blend line practically disappeared compared to my usual method. Anyone else have a go-to tip for making metallics blend smoother without having to repaint the whole panel?

Whoa, hold up - @nguyen.blake, I gotta push back a little here. Gavin's not totally off base, but he's mixing up his worlds. That ceramic glaze stuff is about fluxing agents in a kiln, not automotive paint reducers. Slower reducer in paint does help metallics lay flat by giving the solvent more time to escape, but it's more about preventing dry spray and mottling than flipping flakes vertical. I've done metallics on a midnight blue BMW where the blend was perfect with a medium reducer, but if I went too slow it'd actually cause the flakes to sink too deep and look darker. So yeah, slower reducer helps, but it's a balancing act - go too slow and you'll chase the shade all day long.

Doubt slower reducer does much for flake orientation honestly.

It was actually something I read on a ceramics forum a while back where a guy tested a bunch of different flake recipes with and without the slower reducer. The difference in orientation was pretty noticeable under a microscope, even if you can't see it with your eyes. The slower melting fluxes let the flakes settle more gradually, so they don't all get bumped out of place by the gas bubbles. Without that slower reducer, you end up with a lot more flakes sitting vertical or at weird angles, which kills the sparkle effect. I've tried it in a few glaze tests myself and saw way more consistent reflective surfaces with the slow melt stuff.
