Guy at the Puyallup swap meet said he preps jambs with a $1 chip brush and I tried it on a silver Civic
He was selling old trim tools and mentioned he never buys masking tape wider than 1 inch because the cheap chip brush gets paint into door jambs faster than any gun setup he owns. I grabbed a 3 pack for $2 and used one on a 2016 Civic respray, and honestly the coverage in the hinge area came out cleaner than my normal method. Does anyone else here use brushes for jambs, or am I about to find out why this is a bad habit in 6 months?
I've been spraying jambs with a gun and tape for 15 years and my hinge areas still look like a toddler got loose with a rattle can, so a $1 brush beating me is pretty on brand. The thing that would worry me is paint sitting in the hinge pocket too thick and gumming up the check strap later. Chip brushes shed bristles too, and nothing says professional like a stray hair cured into your clear. If it laid out clean though, run it, just keep the coats thin and poke the hinge pin area with a pick before it sets up. Worst case you find out in 6 months and it's a 20 minute fix, not a respray.
