Rant: A painter in my shop said my panel gaps looked like a 'kindergarten cutout'.

He pointed out my measuring was off by almost an eighth of an inch on a door skin. I started using a feeler gauge set for every alignment now. What's your go-to method for checking gaps before paint?

Ever read about using a light behind the panel? I heard some guys put a trouble light on the other side of the gap in a dark shop. You can see every little variation in the shadow line it makes. Seems like it would show a lot more than just a feeler gauge in one spot.

An eighth of an inch is nothing to get that mad about.

That light trick is a solid move... we used to do that on cabinet installs all the time. A cheap shop light behind the panel makes a shadow line you can see from ten feet away. Shows the whole run of the gap, not just one spot you check with a gauge. Makes it real easy to see where you need to shim.
