Unpopular opinion: Maybe we don't all need $500 paint guns to do good work

I spent 5 years using a cheap HVLP gun from Harbor Freight for everything. Thought I was getting good results until last month when I borrowed a friend's Sata at his shop and sprayed a fender. The difference in finish was huge. But now I wonder, is the gun really the issue or is it just practice and prep? Has anyone else found their old gear was fine once they learned better technique?

The difference in finish was huge" - yeah no kidding. A Sata will lay down paint smoother than anything from Harbor Freight, no matter how good your prep is. But does that mean you need to spend $500? Probably not if you're just doing hobby work. I'd say cheap guns can still look decent once you really dial in your technique, but there's definitely a ceiling on what they can do. At the end of the day, maybe it's a bit of both, you know?

You said "there's definitely a ceiling on what they can do" and that's the part I keep going back and forth on. I've seen guys on YouTube get surprisingly good results out of a $30 gun with perfect thinning and air pressure, but then I tried the same thing and got orange peel city. So where exactly is that ceiling? Is it more about the gun's design limits or is it just our own skill hitting a wall before the gun does? Because I feel like a lot of people blame the tool when really they just haven't figured out how to work with it yet. But I also know there's only so much you can polish a turd.

But is it really though? I mean, how many people actually have the air setup dialed in perfect? Most guys just grab a cheap gun, screw on the air hose, and expect magic. I bet half the orange peel issues come from the compressor not having enough CFMs or a dirty regulator, not the gun itself. YouTube guys spend hours getting every variable right, so of course they make a $30 gun look pro. Plus, you can sand and polish out a lot of orange peel, so even a rough spray can be saved. I just think people cry "cheap gun" way too fast when they haven't ruled out everything else first lol.

Man, I was totally in the "just learn your cheap gun" camp until I borrowed a buddy's Iwata and it blew my mind. I can't deny it anymore, the tool really does make a huge difference once your technique is already solid.
