My $25 detailing brush set finally paid for itself today

Ngl, I was this close to trashing those cheap brushes I got off Amazon, but they got all the crud out of my cup holder crevices in like 10 minutes flat. Has anyone else found a random cheap tool that ended up being a lifesaver for interior work?

Dollar store toothbrushes. Bought a 10 pack for a buck and use them for vents, buttons, and around the shifter. They scrub way better than those detailing brushes with the soft bristles that just push dirt around. The bristles are stiff enough to dig in but not scratch plastic.

You know, that reminds me of the time I was cleaning out my mother in law's car after she'd had it for like fifteen years. She was a smoker and the ash and dust had built up in every little crack and crevice. I tried everything. I had a whole bag of detailing brushes, microfiber cloths, even one of those gel things you push into the vents. Nothing worked. Then I grabbed a toothbrush from her bathroom that had seen better days and it was like magic. The bristles just dug right into that gunk and pulled it out. I went out and bought a ten pack the next day for my own truck. Now I keep one in the glove box for touch ups at a stoplight.

@river952 hit on exactly why I switched to those cheap toothbrushes too. The bristles on those dollar store ones are stiff but not brittle, so they hold up through multiple cleanings without bending out of shape. I use them on my steering wheel spokes and around the radio knobs where dust really cakes on. The key is they scrub the texture of the plastic without leaving micro scratches like a hard nylon brush can. Plus when they get too gross I just toss them without feeling bad about wasting money on a fancy detailing kit.
