Vent: I finally tracked every mile on my last car move and the number made me rethink the whole quote game
Everyone in this space says the cheap online quote is a trap and you have to pay for full service, but I moved a car from Phoenix to Denver last month and tracked it hard. The online broker quoted me $640, then the actual carrier called and said $890, which is the classic bait and switch folks warn about here. So I called three outfits direct and two of them flat out refused to give a locked number without a deposit first. The one that did lock in at $710 ended up being 41 cents a mile, and I only know that because I ran the math myself on the drive. By the time the car showed up four hours late I stopped caring about the price and just wanted my keys back. Curious if anyone here has a broker they actually trust to lock a number without playing games.
Had a buddy do the Phoenix to Denver run too and he got quoted $600 online then hit with $950 at pickup because they said his car was "oversized" all of a sudden. He learned to get the carrier's DOT number upfront and call them straight instead of going through a broker, and his next move locked at a real number with no games. Splitting the broker out of the deal seems to be the only way to stop the bait and switch.
