DAE remember when fixing a printer was just a screwdriver and some tape?
Our office got one of those AI chat tools last month and I figured I would ask it to sort a messy spreadsheet of 400 old invoices, easy enough right. It kept freezing up or giving me columns that made no sense, so after 2 hours I did it by hand in 25 minutes while the printer jammed behind me, same as it did back in 2005 when I just opened the thing up and pulled out the crumpled paper with my fingers. Does anyone else feel like we are handing off jobs to these tools before they can even do the simple stuff we used to just fix ourselves?
The bigger problem is that when the tool screws up nobody can explain why because we lost the ability to just pop the hood and look. We traded fixable for mysterious, and that trade only gets worse as the old timers who knew how things worked retire.
