My grocery store's new self-checkout robot kept trying to bag a single banana as 'produce item unknown' for ten minutes straight last Tuesday.

Had that happen once. You have to find the little lookup screen, type in "banana", and then hit the button for the loose produce option. The weight check gets turned off for those items.

Thanks cole549, that trick saves so much time.

Ugh, I actually hate the loose produce button! It just makes things slower for everyone behind you. You have to stop, poke at the screen, search for the item, and then guess the right one. Half the time I pick "organic avocado" when it's regular and the weight is wrong, so the machine freaks out anyway. Just put a sticker on your pepper like a normal person.

Oh man, the "loose produce option" is a lifesaver. I had a self-checkout absolutely lose its mind over a bell pepper once, just beeping "unexpected item" over and over. The poor employee had to come over and do the same code, and we just stood there nodding at the machine like it was a misbehaving child. It's wild how they can scan a thousand barcodes but one piece of fruit breaks the whole system.
