Overheard my neighbor talking about self-checkout bots in grocery stores
He was saying how the new system at our local Piggly Wiggly can scan items and bag them without any human touch. It's only been there 2 weeks and they already laid off 4 cashiers. Has anyone else seen these things popping up in smaller towns?

Man, that thing about the scanners bagging stuff without any human touch is wild... I heard from my cousin who works at a Kroger in Oklahoma that theyve got one that can even tell if produce is ripe or not. It uses some kind of camera that looks at the color and feel through the plastic. They said it flagged a bad avocado once and kicked it off the belt by itself. Makes you wonder how long before these things are doing all the stocking too... especially in small towns where every job counts.

Sounds like a robot fruit snob now, @murphy.tessa. Pretty soon we'll have scanners arguing with customers about whether an avocado is actually ready. "Sorry ma'am, this Haas is a 3 out of 10, ejecting it into the trash." Real friendly service from a machine that never has to deal with a hangry shopper.
