That self checkout count in Portland shook me
I was at a Fred Meyer last week and the store manager told me they cut 6 cashier shifts because the new self checkouts with AI cameras handle like 60% of transactions now. He said it matter of factly, but I couldn't stop thinking about those workers I used to chat with every week. Has anyone else heard specific numbers like that from stores in their area?

My local Safeway told me the same thing last month, 4 lanes gone just like that. But I watch those self checkouts and half the time people need help bagging or the machine freezes, so somebody's still standing there doing the work, just not getting a paycheck for it.
