Update: spent 3 weekends trying to figure out if my job was safe from AI, and one spreadsheet finally did it
Back in January I started hearing rumors that my company was testing an AI tool for our invoice review work, and I panicked hard. I tried reading every article and watching every YouTube video about automation, and that ate up 3 whole weekends with zero answers. Then a coworker in Dallas named Priya showed me a trick: list every single task you do in a week and mark each one as 'robot can do it' or 'robot cannot do it.' Mine came out to 31 tasks, and 19 of them were just copy and paste stuff that a script could honestly handle. The scary part was seeing that my actual judgment calls, like when a vendor in Ohio sends a weird partial credit, were only 4 tasks but they were the 4 that took the most brain power. So now I am trying to learn the tool instead of fighting it, but I still do not know if that saves me or just speeds up my own replacement. Has anyone else done this task list thing and did it make you feel better or worse?
