Watched my grocery store add 8 self-checkout lanes in 2 years, and now they only have 1 cashier left on Sunday nights
So the Kroger near me in Columbus used to have like 5 cashiers on a Sunday night back in 2022. I went in a couple weeks ago and there was 1 person at a register and 8 self-checkout machines. I asked the one cashier what happened and she said they just stopped hiring for those spots. It feels like a slow creep where you don't notice until it's already done. Has anyone else seen their local store do this, or is it just mine?
My Kroger in Clintonville did the same thing. We went from 4 lanes open on a weeknight to 2 at most, and they added a whole row of those scan-as-you-go handheld things too. What gets me is they still make you wait while one poor person watches 10 machines and runs back and forth to fix errors, so its not even faster. Once the cashiers are gone they know you have no choice, you either deal with the machines or you drive somewhere else. Give it a few more years and there wont be a single register left, just a wall of screens and one teenager standing there looking stressed.
