Old timer told me to always pre-tin my crimp connectors... I laughed until I had to redo 40 splices

So this guy named Jerry from the hangar next door at PDX kept telling me to put a tiny bit of solder on the wire before crimping into D-sub pins. I thought he was just stuck in the 80s. Then I had three connectors fail on a nav unit after just two weeks of vibration testing. Has anyone else had better luck with pre-tinning or do you think it just messes with the crimp spec?

Got a friend who swore by pretinning until his crimps started cracking around the solder joint.

Did he check if the solder was actually bonding to the wire or just sitting on the surface?
