Serious question, has anyone else realized they were sending way too many cold emails?
I looked at my open rates last week and saw a 2% reply rate after sending 500 emails. A friend told me to try sending 50 really good ones instead. What's a better way to start a conversation with a new business client?

Man, I feel that in my bones.

But that data point is just guessing too.

Yeah, that 2% reply rate hits close to home. I've definitely been the guy blasting out generic stuff just hoping something sticks. Joelburns is right that it's all guessing at first, but man, sending 500 emails to get 10 replies feels like using a sledgehammer to hang a picture. I'm trying to slow down now and actually read a company's last few posts before I type anything, so it doesn't sound like I'm just copying and pasting to everyone. It's way more work, but at least I don't feel like a spam bot anymore.

Okay, sending 50 really good ones sounds nice in theory, but it's still just guessing. That 2% reply rate on 500 emails is actually a solid data point. You now know what doesn't work. I'd use that info to tweak your next 500, not scrap the whole method. The trick is starting with something you know they care about, like a problem their company just talked about online.
