Got completely turned around on the Lost Coast Trail in California last fall

The tide tables were wrong by over an hour and I had to scramble up a cliff with my pack on. Now I double check three different sources for any coastal hike. How do you guys verify your tide info?

Oh man, that's scary! I got caught once too and now I always check the official NOAA site and a local surf report.

My NOAA check is now a full morning ritual. Takes longer than making coffee.

Relying on those sites can make you too soft. I learned more from getting caught in that surprise squall last spring than any forecast ever taught me. Sometimes you just have to read the water and the sky yourself, feel the wind shift. Checking a screen removes you from the real experience.

That squall story reminds me of a time I was fishing off the pier near Grays Harbor and the wind just died completely, then came back from the opposite direction about ten minutes later. Felt like the weather was playing tricks on me, and I remember thinking how @vera195 would have laughed if she saw me scrambling to tie down my gear. Glad you learned from it though, sometimes getting caught is the only real way to get a sense for how fast things can change out there.
