GPS app vs paper map on the JMT, paper won me over
Last summer I did a 60 mile stretch of the John Muir Trail near Reds Meadow and compared my Garmin InReach with a worn USGS topo. The GPS kept losing signal in the canyon walls and drained battery fast, but the paper map never failed me once. What really sold me was how much better I planned campsites and water stops when I could see the whole valley at once instead of a tiny screen. Anyone else find themselves ditching the tech for a folded map on longer routes?
