Just realized a 3-day food carry on the Lost Coast Trail changed my whole pack weight

I did the 25 mile stretch in California last month and was dreading the heavy food bag for 4 days. On a whim, I repacked everything into zip locks, took out all the boxes, and swapped some meals for just olive oil and couscous. My pack dropped a solid 4 pounds before I even added water. Some folks say you need the variety and calories of full meals, but I found I was happier with less weight and simpler food. Has anyone else tried cutting their food weight down to the bare minimum on a longer trip?

That 4 pound drop was mostly from ditching packaging, not the food itself.

Wait, 4 pounds just from packaging? That seems like a lot lol. Were you carrying full glass jars or something? Most of my backpacking food comes in bags already, maybe a cardboard box. I get wanting to save weight but that number feels off.

Bettym11, maybe he was packing canned chili and a cast iron Dutch oven.
