Rant: people keep planning river crossings for the afternoon, and that is backwards
On the High Sierra Trail two summers back, the creek that hit my knees at 2pm was ankle deep when I walked past the same spot at 7am. Creeks fed by snowmelt run low overnight and peak in the heat of the day, so cross early even if it means a cold, grumpy start. Does anyone else plan their whole day around crossing times, or am I the only one moving camp at 5am for this?
Creeks fed by snowmelt run low overnight" is spot on, and I learned that lesson the hard way in the Winds one July. Got to a crossing around 4pm that looked scary, waited it out till morning, and at 7am it was a totally different creek, barely above my boots. Now I just treat water like a morning chore, same as coffee and packing up, your mileage may vary depending on the snowpack that year.
