That so-called 'ultralight' bear canister cost me a night of sleep and $75
I grabbed a carbon fiber canister last summer because the specs said 12 ounces lighter than my old one, but it jammed shut on day 3 near Glacier Peak. Took me 45 minutes and a stick to pry the lid off, and by then the squirrels had shredded my stuff sack for nesting material. I ended up duct-taping the damn thing and still had to carry it out, so the weight savings meant nothing. Anybody else had a fancy gear failure that made you wish you just stuck with the basic plastic version?
