That ultralight tent I swore was a gimmick actually saved my knees on the JMT last summer.

I carried a 3-pound tent for years thinking anything lighter would rip in a breeze, but after a buddy lent me his DCF shelter for a 10-day hike, I shaved 4 pounds off my pack and didn't feel a single gust. Has anyone else given in to the lightweight hype and actually been proven wrong?

Man, that hits close to home. Same exact thing happened to me.

Are you kidding me? A 3-pounder is nothing compared to what I've seen people carry around in my neck of the woods. I knew a guy who lugged a 10-pound chunk of concrete in his backpack every day for two years straight. He thought it was a good way to build character or something. That's just insane to me, but I guess everyone's got their weird habits. Makes you wonder what people actually gain from stuff like that, doesn't it?
