Update: I stopped using my phone for nav on thru-hikes after getting turned around twice on the AT in Virginia
Years ago I planned every mile on my phone and never carried a paper map, which worked fine until the battery died on a wet stretch near McAfee Knob and I wandered an extra 3 miles downhill. Now I print the relevant sections and keep them in a zip bag, plus I write the next water source and shelter on a sticky note taped to my fuel can. Phone stays in my pack for photos. How do you all handle nav on long stretches where the trail markings get sketchy?
