Vent: old timer in Spokane showed me how he set fence posts with just a bucket of gravel
Helped my uncle tear out a rotting fence line in Spokane about 6 months ago and his 78 year old neighbor wandered over with a 5 gallon bucket and started dumping gravel around each post instead of concrete. He claimed his posts from 1994 are still dead straight because water drains down past the gravel instead of sitting in the concrete and rotting the wood. Has anyone here actually tried the gravel method on a full fence run or is this just an old guy thing that only worked for him?
Was the gravel packed tight around the post or just dumped in loose? Because loose gravel actually holds water against the wood pretty well unless it's graded to drain away from the post.
