Appreciation post: My local library in Springfield had a free screening of 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' last night
I was just dropping off some books and saw a flyer for their 'Cult Classic' film night. I figured, why not, it's free. They set up a projector in the community room with about twenty folding chairs. The print they showed was a digital transfer, but it was still gloriously fuzzy, and you could see every wobbling cardboard tombstone. What really got me was the audience. A mix of older folks who probably saw it when it came out and a few college kids who were howling at the flying saucers on visible strings. The shared laughter at the famously bad dialogue, like 'Future events such as these will affect you in the future,' made it a real event, not just watching a bad movie alone. It turned a famously cheap and messy film into a genuine community experience. Has anyone else found a great public spot for enjoying these kinds of movies with other people?

Honestly that's the whole point though, it's not ruined. Watching a bad movie alone is just kind of sad. But when you're in a room and everyone groans at the same terrible line, or laughs at the same wobbly set, it turns into something fun. It's like the shared experience is the real show, not the movie itself. That's what makes those library nights so good.

Yeah, that's exactly it. The thing is, it's not even about the movie being good or bad at that point. It's about the vibe in the room. I've been to a few of those at a little indie theater downtown, and half the fun is hearing the reactions you'd never get sitting on your couch. It turns the movie into just the reason everyone showed up.
