Bought a $45 proofing box, turns out my oven light was doing the same job
Honestly, I kept seeing everyone online swear by these fancy proofing boxes for sourdough. I finally caved and got one from a local supply shop in Austin last month. Then I left my oven light on by accident during a bulk ferment and the dough hit 78°F, same as the box, and rose perfectly. Ngl, I checked it with two thermometers over 3 days to make sure. Has anyone else skipped the gear and just used a cheap hack that worked just as well?
Same thing happened here up in Portland, I got a free trash-picked oven and the pilot light keeps my dough at 82 all winter, never bought a box since. Throw a wet towel under it and you got a mini proofing drawer for zero dollars.
