Visited a bakery in Portland that charged $9 for a croissant

Walked in last Saturday. Saw the price on the little card. Almost turned around. But I bought it anyway. It was good, not great. Felt like I paid for the vibe. Anyone else seeing crazy prices at pastry shops?

The real trick is that $9 croissant is probably from frozen dough anyway. Most bakeries use pre-made frozen pastry because it's consistent and faster. That bougie little shop on Alberta? Their stuff comes off the same delivery truck as the grocery store freezer aisle. People are paying for the display case and the exposed brick, not butter and flour. I've started asking straight up if they make it in house. Half the time the barista gets all weird and dodges the question. That tells you everything.

Does it really matter that much though? Like, if the croissant tastes good, who cares if it came out of a frozen box? People get so worked up over the whole "house made" thing when half the time you can't even tell the difference. A frozen croissant that's baked fresh still beats a stale gas station one any day. Spending time interrogating baristas over sourcing just sounds exhausting. Let people enjoy their pastry without making it a whole moral crusade.

Yeah just ask. If they stall, walk. Saves you $9 and disappointment.
