I finally tried that sourdough starter everyone raves about...

For months I thought the whole sourdough craze was just people showing off on Instagram. My cousin Jenny kept telling me her starter was like a pet and I just rolled my eyes. Then last Tuesday I borrowed a cup of her starter and tried making a basic loaf. I followed her recipe exactly and ended up with a dense brick that could break a window. She laughed and showed me her technique... turns out I was overworking the dough and killing all the air bubbles. After three more tries I finally got a decent loaf with that crunchy crust and soft inside. Now I get why people name their starters and keep them alive for years. Has anyone else had a baking trend totally win them over after they swore it was overhyped?

I borrowed a cup of her starter" - that part got me. People spend weeks developing their own starters and you just took some from your cousin. That's like borrowing someone's dog. I still think the whole sourdough thing is way too much work for a loaf of bread you can buy for four bucks at the grocery store.

Honestly that's like the sourdough version of getting a puppy from someone who already did the potty training. You just skipped the hard part and got the payoff.

Wait, you actually got it to work and now you're hooked on it too?
