My sourdough starter exploded on day 3 and I almost gave up

I was trying to make my first sourdough starter from scratch last Tuesday. I left it on the counter in a mason jar with the lid barely cracked, and when I came back from work, it had bubbled over so bad the whole counter was covered in sticky goo. I almost threw the whole thing out, but my girlfriend talked me into scraping out what was left and feeding it again. Now it's day 8 and it actually smells right and doubled in size, so I guess the mess was a win in disguise. Has anyone else had a starter go totally wild on them like that?

Yeah that's just how it goes sometimes. It's like life, you gotta let things get messy before they turn into something good. Glad you stuck with it.
